Interview with Dennis Dunaway on Long Live Rock
Dennis Dunaway was the original bass player and founding member of Alice Cooper, a band he started with a school friend named Vincent Furnier. The band recorded a legendary strong of hit albums like Killer and Billion Dollar Babies, with hit singles like “No More Mr. Nice Guy”, “Be My Lover” and “School’s Out”. In 1975 Vincent Furnier left the group for a solo career, taking the name Alice Cooper and the stage persona as his own.
Dunaway moved on to play with bands including Billion Dollar Babies and Dead Ringer before a bout with Crohn’s disease sidelined him. In recent years he has returned to performing and recording in a variety of projects, and on Sunday he joined us on Long Live Rock to discuss his days with Alice Cooper, an upcoming project with his new band 5th Avenue Vampires (with guitarist Richie Scarlet), and another project he has coming out with Joe and Albert Bouchard from Blue Oyster Cult called Blue Coupe. He also graciously let us preview two new unreleased tracks from 5th Avenue Vampires, “Fear Me” and “She’ll Lie”.
I’d never interviewed Dennis before, and what struck me most about him is the sharp contrast between the dark edge of his songs and stage persona, and what a really funny and upbeat person he is in conversation. He was extremely funny and genuinely a nice guy, and this interview turned out to be one of those times when we probably could have talked for another hour.
