Interview with Michael Cartellone (Part Two)

by admin on Oct.21, 2009, under Interviews, Podcasts

This is the second segment of my recent in-depth interview with Lynyrd Skynyrd drummer Michael Cartellone. In this podcast episode we discuss Michael’s early days in the business; moving from Ohio to New York to work with progressive rocker Eddie Jobson; auditioning for a spot in Tommy Shaw’s road band; and what it was like to land that gig and go from working a day job one week, to performing in major arenas the next.

Yardbirds Drummer Wants His Old Job Back

by admin on Oct.21, 2009, under News

FROM WWW.CLASSICROCKMAGAZINE.COM:

Yardbirds drummer Jim McCarty is hoping his old job is still open.

Talking to Classic Rock, the man who also co-founded folk rock heroes Renaissance with late Yardbirds singer Keith Relf, said:

“When The Yardbirds started in 1962, we only expected it to last a year or so. At the time I worked in an insurance office, and asked my boss if he’d keep the job open for me. I must find out if he kept his word!”

The Yardbirds will celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2012 – clearly a much more major important occasion than the Olympic Games. McCarty hopes the band will mark the occasion in a suitable fashion.

“It would be great to have a special event, and get all the living former members involved – especially those three guitarists [Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page]. But who knows whether they’ll be interested.”

McCarty has just released a solo album called Sitting On The Top Of Time, and hopes to do some low key gigs to promote it.

“That depends on The Yardbirds’ touring schedule. We are still active – in fact, the average age of the band has come down now to about 30. Apart from Chris [Dreja, rhythm guitar] and myself everyone else is really young in this band now.”

The next Yardbirds show is on November 30 at Charlotte Street Blues in Central London.

Faith No More To Tour America

by admin on Oct.21, 2009, under News

FROM WWW.CLASSICROCKMAGAZINE.COM:

Faith No More will tour the US.

The band, who re-formed earlier this year, have so far avoided doing any shows in America. But now bassist Billy Gould has said on his Twitter page:

“In response to all of our concerned US brethren… YES we are… now actively planning US dates.”

So that’s clear enough.

This news is brought to you by VH1 Radio’s Dave Basner

Most people who head out to see Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band in concert leave pretty pleased.  So what is it about The Boss’ music that strikes his fans so vividly?  Springsteen spoke to us about what he strives to do with his songs.

“The thing that makes it explosive, that brings you down when you hear it – that’s what you’re always moving towards in a song. What is that thing that is going to make this explode inside of somebody and somebody’s going to go, ‘Oh my God, that’s me.’”
Folks in Philadelphia will no doubt be exploding inside tonight.  Springsteen and the E Street Band are playing in the City of Brotherly Love this evening.  For all of The Boss’ dates, head to BruceSpringsteen.net.

     Fuel Records released  the
Guitar Zeus project by legendary drummer Carmine Appice, featuring a compilation of 24 of the best Guitar Zeus songs. Conquering Heroes hit the streets on August 25th. The double-disc set showcases the prolific talents of many world renowned rock guitarists including Brian May, Ted Nugent, Slash, Zakk Wylde, Richie Sambora, and many more. Since that time, Appice has been on a whirlwind publicity and instore campaign.

Author, clinician, drummer… Carmine Appice first came to prominence as the percussionist with the late 1960s psychedelic band Vanilla Fudge. He contributed distinctive background harmonies with bassist Tim Bogert, adding to the group’s high decibel sonic assault. After five albums, Appice and Bogert left Vanilla Fudge to form the blues rock quartet Cactus with vocalist Rusty Day and guitarist Jim McCarty. Eventually, Appice left Cactus with Bogert to join Jeff Beck in the power trio Beck, Bogert & Appice, and then later joined Rod Stewart’s backing band in 1977, co-writing hit songs such as “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?” and “Young Turks”. In 1978, Appice played drums on Paul Stanley’s first solo album. He was a member of KGB featuring Ray Kennedy, Rick Grech, Mike Bloomfield and Barry Goldberg, and has recorded with Stanley Clarke, Ted Nugent, and Pink Floyd. He was the drummer for the bands King Kobra and Blue Murder, and toured with Ozzy Osbourne.

Appice first created Guitar Zeus in 1995 when he recruited some of the most famous guitarists in the world to be a part of his project, from Zakk Wylde and Ted Nugent to Brian May (Queen) and Slash (Guns N Roses), even tennis legend John McEnroe. Songs also included guest vocals by Dug Pinnick and Edgar Winter. Throughout the late 1990’s, three Guitar Zeus CDs were released to worldwide critical acclaim.

“Guitar Zeus for me was an amazing experience, working with so many great guitarists”, Appice affirms. “It was fun picking out songs for each. Each guitarist loved the songs. It was awesome. I would do it again in a minute even though it was alot of work. I consider these drum tracks to be some of my best drum performances in my career!”
