Interview with Howard Leese (Part Two)
by admin on Jul.21, 2009, under Interviews, Podcasts
This podcast episode is Part Two of my recent interview with guitarist Howard Leese. In this segment we discuss working with great singers on Secret Weapon; why there are no comps or punches on the album; working as a producer with the sensitivities of singers; what it was like to work with Ann Wilson in the studio; the pros and cons of digital recording and mixing; why Bruce Springsteen deliberately overdubs mistakes onto his records; auto-tuning vocals; and the growing trend of artists playing to triggered tracks live and why it’s not right for rock and roll.
Stay tuned for Part Three, which I will post Thursday.

Being in Van Halen was intimidating, Extreme singer says
by admin on Jul.21, 2009, under News
From Classicrockmagazine.com:
When Extreme singer Gary Cherone joined Van Halen in 1996, most people assumed it would be a marriage made in hell. And y’know what? It was!
After a failed reunion with David Lee Roth, Van Halen made just one album with Cherone: the ill-fated Van Halen III. Cherone discussed his tortured time in Van Halen in a recent interview with KNAC.
Highlights follow:
Q: What did you learn or take away from your experience, with regards to being in Van Halen?
Cherone: Well, looking back on the three years I spent with Van Halen I guess, if I had to do it all over again I think I would have preferred to tour with them and then put out a record… it would have been a better idea to establish myself first and then hit the studio with the band. At the time it may have looked odd on paper but it actually worked live! I made a concerted effort to do the old Van Halen tunes that Sammy was not doing. I wanted to do the deep cuts… as a live act we did songs their fans had not heard in years! I don’t, however, think we made a great record. I think there were some great ideas and some little gems but it was not a great record. I had fun but at times it was like being a stranger in a strange land.
Q: How intimidating was it to be in the band?
Cherone: It was very intimidating. Most of the time the criticism just rolled off my back, but if I had a bad night or my throat hurt… sometimes it would get to me but what are you gonna do? I will say, each night when we came into town I would hear the radio DJs take their shots at me and the band, but at the end of most of the shows the same DJs would be backstage and almost apologise to me or at the very least admit that the show was way better than they had originally thought.

New Studio Album Murder By Pride In Stores Today
(NASHVILLE, Tennessee) – Legendary Christian rock band Stryper will kick off their 25th Anniversary Tour in September, touring throughout the U.S. before heading out on an international run in early 2010. In addition to their hits and fan favorites, Stryper will perform songs from their latest studio album Murder by Pride (Big3 Records) which was released today - twenty-five years to the day after the release of their debut EP, The Yellow and Black Attack. The tour will be a two set show. The first set will be new Stryper material and include current bassist Tracy Ferrie, along with original members Michael Sweet, Robert Sweet and Oz Fox. The second set will feature all four original members, including original bassist Tim Gaines, wearing new yellow and black stage outfits from the original designer and performing the band’s hits from the last twenty-five years. Confirmed Dates (more dates to be announced): The 25th Anniversary Tour will be a family project, with Michael Sweet Jr.’s band Flight Patterns opening all dates. Flight Patterns’ debut album will be released this fall on Fifty Three Five Records. Murder by Pride includes a cover of the BOSTON song “Peace of Mind” (featuring BOSTON founder, guitarist and songwriter Tom Scholz on the recording). Ironically, Stryper had recorded “Peace of Mind” and planned to include it on Murder by Pride long before Michael Sweet was asked to join BOSTON on vocals and guitar for their 54-city headlining tour of North America in summer 2008.
